The recipes reflect a philosophy in which usefulness, restraint, hospitality, and respect for ingredients were closely connected.

Illustrated by Virginia Filson Walsh, this 1962 second printing retains its wonderfully distinctive midcentury dust jacket, with rows of stylized Shaker cooks carrying colorful bowls.
