In 1964–65, American journalist Blaine Littell set out to retrace Henry Morton Stanley’s nineteenth-century journey across Africa. His route took him through Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and the Congo, encountering nations navigating the early years of independence.

Stanley’s writings provide a historical counterpoint to Littell’s observations of daily life, political change, and the people he meets along the way. The result combines travel narrative with reporting from a consequential moment in East and Central African history.

This first edition comes from Doane Perry’s estate. A personal inscription addressed to him as “T.D.” connects the book’s subject directly to his own travels. Signed “Mike,” it expresses the hope that Africa will hold a growing fascination for him and that they might someday see it together.
