Description
Kitabu Cha 1–4
A. Loogman
Nelson, 1965
Format: Paperback instructional booklets (4 volumes)
Condition: Very Good Plus
A complete four-volume set of Someni Kwa Furaha, part of Nelson’s Swahili Readers series, published in 1965. Written by A. Loogman and approved by the East African Swahili Committee, these readers were developed for structured Swahili language instruction and literacy.
The set includes Kitabu Cha 1, 2, 3, and 4, each featuring simple illustrated narratives designed to support language acquisition. Scarce as a complete instructional run, particularly outside institutional holdings.
This set comes from the library of Doane Perry, a scholar of African Studies and longtime Peace Corps participant who lived and taught in Africa. Perry’s collection included works he personally used and acquired during his academic and field work, lending strong scholarly provenance to this material.
All four volumes are paperback booklets with light age toning consistent with mid-20th-century educational materials. Bindings are sound, pages are clean and legible, and the set is preserved in archival sleeves.
An excellent example of mid-century African language pedagogy, suitable for collectors, scholars, and institutional libraries with interests in African studies, linguistics, or postcolonial education.
