Description
Published while World War II was still being fought, Prefaces to Peace brings together five American political figures considering what should follow victory. Their subjects include international cooperation, the causes of conflict, economic security, and the practical difficulties of building a lasting peace.
The volume contains the complete texts of Wendell Willkie’s One World and Herbert Hoover and Hugh Gibson’s The Problems of Lasting Peace. These appear alongside Henry Wallace’s “The Price of Free World Victory,” drawn from The Century of the Common Man, and Sumner Welles’s “Blue-print for Peace,” from The World of the Four Freedoms.
The cooperative publication by four publishing houses is an interesting feature in itself. A printed wartime production notice explains the use of lighter paper, smaller margins, and more words per page to conserve materials and labor. Together with its original portrait-backed jacket, the book preserves both the political concerns and publishing conditions of 1943.
