Fantasy occupies a specific genre in fiction as it doesn’t need to be based on what is possible. The writers of fantasy move beyond the natural laws of reality often using magic, world-building, and creatures as the basis of the narrative. Many fantasy novels gain inspiration from myth, folklore, and legend and many have a distinct relationship to the ancient past. Fantasy is by its nature speculative fiction and it relies on the reader’s willingness to suspend disbelief. There are many sub-genres of fantasy but for our purposes, we are inclusive under this general term.
Fantasy is a realm where imagination knows no bounds. Unlike other fiction genres, fantasy isn’t constrained by reality—it thrives on the impossible. Writers weave tales of magic, mythical creatures, epic quests, and otherworldly realms, often drawing inspiration from myth, folklore, and legend.
Many fantasy novels transport readers to ancient or entirely new worlds where the rules of nature bend, and the extraordinary becomes ordinary. By its very nature, fantasy is speculative fiction, requiring readers to embrace suspension of disbelief as they embark on journeys filled with adventure, mystery, and enchantment.
There are many sub-genres of fantasy, from high fantasy and dark fantasy to urban fantasy and fairy tales.
